Notes from the Field

I write this on the eve of our first frost advisory posted for this season. To date we've been blessed with warm weather and ample moisture, giving us this gradual descent into fall. For farmers, the first frost is one of the defining features of this season. The anticipation of the first frosty morning brings with it many emotions. The first emotion is that of panic. There is a strong desire to either a) protect every cold sensitive crop on the farm or b) to get every cold sensitive vegetable out of the fields, like any peppers, tomatoes or eggplant still on the plants - both of which are nearly impossible. Sure we probably could get the last little eggplant or tomato, but it's hard to do when there are so many other fall crops in their prime. I hate to see something go by, but these plants have produced well for us this year and they don't owe us a thing!

Soon the rational part of our brains switch on and we realize that it's ok. We have to let go sooner or later. Once we do, we can stop worrying about saving something that should probably be let go anyway and we can fully embrace what's in season. After all, kale, collards and cabbage only get sweeter with the cold nights. In fact, just about everything we have in the ground will survive the cold night temperatures of October. So we look forward to the next couple of weeks when we can harvest the season's bounty during chilly mornings and be rewarded by the warm afternoon sunshine.
